Q&A
Does this mean that Wyandotte students will go fewer days but more hours per day like other 4 day schools in the area?
No. Wyandotte students will go the same amount of days (165) that is required by the state of Oklahoma that all other area Oklahoma schools have to go. Furthermore, the WPS school day is not changing at all to add extra hours. WPS is simply arranging the calendar in such a way that we have added a couple of days at the beginning and end of the calendar and reduced the length of Fall Break and Thanksgiving Break. When we started building a series of potential calendars and then met with teachers/staff and with a parent focus group, the main thing we heard is that we need to find a way to be consistent so it’s an easy calendar for parents to understand and adjust to. The final draft of the calendar is a product of those meetings. The calendar is very consistent that from the beginning of school until the testing window starts in March, the overwhelming majority of Mondays are off. From the time the testing window starts in March until the end of school in May, WPS will be doing an early release schedule where they go 5 days but release from school on Friday at 1:00.
Pay attention to August 25th, December 15th, and January 12th as the only 5 day anomalies to this pattern. The other Mondays that are in session during that stretch are the Fall Break and Thanksgiving Break weeks that will be designated for special activities for the district such as our Wyandotte Nation Days and similar celebrations and cultural events that we enjoy engaging in as a part of our school year.
What are the benefits of this new calendar arrangement?
Teacher Recruitment: it is a new reality that education is not a career that very many young people are going into now in Oklahoma. This is placing a strain on the ability of schools to recruit new teachers. In talking with other area schools that have gone to the 4 day calendar, that is the biggest plus: there are more quality applicants for available positions.
Fewer discipline referrals: another element mentioned is a significant drop in discipline referrals because the weeks are shorter and there is less frustration.
Fewer absences: there is a built-in day to get appointments and other obligations in and parents don’t have to have their child miss school.
Improved teacher and student morale: this is another huge plus mentioned by others that have gone to this calendar. Having another day to get things done, relax, and enjoy the weekend has drastically improved the attitudes of those given this advantage.
What about practices on the Mondays that students are off?
The district will actually be running a bus to pick up students and student-athletes for their practices on those Mondays.
What about child nutrition on those Mondays off?
We have been working to make sure we have resources to help with this situation. We have been very blessed to have a lot of resources given to the students of Wyandotte Public Schools by the local food bank led by volunteers like Gary Rhodes and others that have been sending food home with students every weekend. We look forward to continuing to meet those needs for the longer weekends.
