There are a number of changes coming for the 2023/2024 year that are exciting, most of which haven’t even been announced until right now. Let’s dive in and see!
AP Classes: we are adding a few Advanced Placement classes that will function in addition to the college classes already offered on campus. You can see them beginning this year in AP Government (typically 10th graders) offered 1st hour, AP US History (typically 11th graders), and AP Music Theory (can be taken at any level of high school instruction).
Internship Opportunities: for seniors who would like to be a part of the internship process, 6th and 7th hours will be available to find employment or internship opportunities in businesses around the area. The Internship Coordinator will in those cases be making regular phone calls with employers to check on work habits, professionalism, and making sure we are setting students up for success.
No more virtual school!! We have a few students who did virtual this last year and some that have tried it the last few years. By and large, this is not an option that is setting students up for success. The majority of these students aren’t finishing classes and are getting further and further behind in credits. We don’t feel like this has been something that has done anything to help students so we are removing this option, at least on a full time basis. There will be emergency situation that might be granted for one class that is needed to graduate that can be done in addition to the rest of the credits students are working on.
Increased college options: we’ve noticed a number of our Seniors are enrolling in a Speech class through NEO in addition to what we’re already offering. There has now been a space opened up in the schedule and a supervising teacher added to hold students accountable.
Second Business section: The Business class has reached its max capacity of students so there will now be an additional section offered 4th hour as well.
Construction II: with the success of the Construction class last year, we’ve seen an increase in enrollment in that program and have offered an advanced version of the class as well. You’ll find it in the schedule 4th hour.
Aviation II (Pilot’s written test) and Aviation III (Part 107 Drone Operator’s License): In addition to the Aviation I class we taught this last year where our program students earned their Ground School Certification, we are opening Aviation II where students will continue the STEM based study of Aviation and also be earning their FAA Pilot’s License Written Portion which will prepare them for beginning their hours to receive their full Pilot’s license. Thanks to the donation from a local patron, our students will also be able to start building their hours by logging time in a certified Redbird Simulator (valued at approximately $125,000) right here on campus! Aviation III will also be offered 1st hour where students will be doing the top level Aviation class while also earning their Part 107 Drone Pilot’s License through the FAA.
Driver’s Education: most schools have moved the Driver’s Education program outside of school hours, as have we the last few years. We are going to offer one section (may be increased depending on demand) during the school day in addition to the section still offered in the evenings. You’ll find that option on the 5th hour section of the Sophomore enrollment. If there are students who are not Sophomores that are wanting to take the class, please email the building principal.
Wrestling: This one has been announced before, but we did want to remind everyone that we are beginning a Wrestling program for males and females in the middle and high schools. Trey Smith (head coach) and Chris Gwartney (assistant and administrator) will be heading this program up.
You can find the now up to date enrollment forms that can be filled out by any students (new to the district, transfers, and students who have already previously filled one out this Spring):
