Wyandotte Youth Wrestling Inspiration

Wrestling is one of the fastest-growing sports in the country, and joining the rest of the many schools in Oklahoma in starting a wrestling program. Also with Wyandotte Middle/High School approving a wrestling program, we would like to take an opportunity to interview Kirsten and Mitchell Weisinger for starting the Wyandotte Youth Wrestling Program.

We asked Kirsten “What inspired you to start the youth wrestling program”, her response was, “Our inspiration to start the wrestling program started with our son, Johnny. He loved wrestling at Seneca and we wanted him to have the opportunity to wrestle for Wyandotte and not have to move. We wanted to bring the same opportunity to other kids as well.”

We asked her “What steps did you take to get the program started?”, her response to the question was, “Mitchell and I started the program by hosting a golf scramble to help raise enough money to buy a mat. With the money from the golf scramble and the help from Wyandotte Nation and a couple other donors we were able to buy one. We then drove almost to Iowa to pick it up and with the help from Eastside Assembly Of God, they allowed us to house it in their gym and host practices there. We were able to find great coaches, Trey and Tony Smith, that were able to make this program succeed.”

We again asked “With the school putting together a Middle/High School program, are you going to continue the Youth Program?”, she responded, “Yes, we will continue the youth program because that is where it all starts. The youth programs are the building blocks to successful middle school and high school programs.”

We also asked “How long did it take to get the program started?”, her response was, “Mitchell and I started talking about it after Johnny finished his wrestling season with Seneca. We began planning for the golf scramble in May and started the season by November 1.”

Kirsten also wanted to add, “This program would not be possible without the great coaching, and the dedicated parents and kids. We cannot thank Mr. Wade and the board enough as well for helping get this in the school and allow the kids this opportunity. The support from the community was beyond any of our expectations and we cannot thank them enough.”

We would like to say thank you to Kirsten and Mitchell Weisinger for dedicating their time to take charge in starting this program as an opportunity for our youth. We are so lucky to have people like them in our community to take the time to invest in the youth.
